ENLIGHTENMENT

"The real meaning of enlightenment

is to gaze with undimmed eyes

on all darkness"

- Nikos Kazantzakis -

Inspired by the Buddhism philosophy of Enlightment, this smaller sized drum of 76 cm / 30 inch is created with a combination of high quality acrylics and glow in the dark paint.

Two hummingbirds are flying through time within the Enso Circle; also called the Circle of Enlightment, the Infinity Circle, Mutual Circle or Circle of togetherness; and is painted with one single strike of the brush in one breath.

Enso refers to the beginning and end of all things; a mirror of the moon; the circle of life and the connectedness of existence. Emptiness and fullness, presence and absence; duality of life; strength, elegance, the universe, single mindedness, the state of the mind of the artist at the moment of creation and the acceptance of imperfection as perfect; the oneness of life and all things contained within it, the spirit of harmonious cooperation; personal development and refinement of character; the visible and invisible; absolute fullness in emptiness; simplicity; completeness; endlessness; perfect harmony; circle of infinity; the no-thing, cyclical nature of existence.

The very imperfections and contours that otherwise prevent a perfect circle from being created, are exactly what makes the Enso beautiful. No one can be perfect, and we humans are beautiful because of our flaws. This idea fits with the concept of Wabi Sabi; which is an intuitive way of living that emphasizes finding beauty in imperfection, and accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay.

As a metaphor for our fleeting lives, two different coloured cherry blossom flowers were painted. The Sakura in Japanese culture recognises the short-lived life span of the flower as a symbol of the transience of human existence. In Buddhism the flower stands for meditation, honesty, principles, integrity. They believe that changes will happen so don’t think anything in life is permanent. Life goes on and the changes are always there.

The hummingbird can see ultraviolet light and it spirit floats free of time, capable of covering great distances. It reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and we should take time to enjoy the present.

"Mired in self and day old dread

I sat in the windsong of a hummingbird

greeting dawn and felt my spirit

reach to touch the feather throat of joy

Connected to light the darkness I hoarded

lifted its tentacles from my tongue to allow

the blessed words of I Am to have expression"
